More than cables in a ceiling

Structured cabling is the organised layer of data cable, racks and patch panels that computers, Wi-Fi and IP cameras run on.

When it is done to a plan, every cable goes to a known port and carries a label at both ends. When it is not, a single fault can take hours of tracing through a tangle.

Networking brands we work with

We supply and install switches and access points from this brand and suggest the models that suit your network.

How a network fits together

Four layers, each planned before installation

  1. 1 Structured cabling CAT6 runs from each faceplate back to the rack, through conduit or trunking.
  2. 2 Rack and patching Cables terminated on patch panels, with short cords to the switches.
  3. 3 Switching and PoE Switches sized for your ports, with PoE to power cameras and access points.
  4. 4 CCTV connectivity IP cameras and the NVR on the same planned network, viewable remotely.

Structured cabling, answered

View all FAQs
What is structured cabling?

A planned network of data cables running from faceplates at each desk or device back to patch panels in a rack, all labelled and documented. Devices plug in with short patch cords, so moving a desk or tracing a fault does not mean pulling new cable.

Why CAT6 rather than CAT5e?

CAT6 handles higher speeds with more headroom and less interference, and costs little more to install. For new cabling it is the sensible default, because re-cabling later costs far more than the difference.

Can you tidy up our existing messy rack?

Yes. We re-dress the rack, replace damaged or over-long patch cords, label ports and points at both ends and note the layout, so the next fault is quicker to find. We usually plan this work outside office hours to limit downtime.

Do you set up cabling for IP cameras?

Yes. We plan cable routes and PoE switches so each camera gets data and power over one cable, check the switch has enough power budget for all of them, and connect the NVR — often in the same job as the cameras.

Will Wi-Fi reach every part of the office?

Coverage depends on walls, floors and the number of users, so we place access points after walking the site rather than relying on a single router. Access points are cabled back to the rack for a steady connection.

Will the work disrupt our office?

Some drilling and cable routing is unavoidable, but we plan the order of work with you and can do noisy or disruptive parts before or after working hours where the site allows.
